Mai Tai Mix Print

When we go to Hawaii, I am always on my ever-present quest for the perfect Mai Tai.  It's weird--I don't even like rum all that well, but there's something about a good Mai Tai that makes Hawaii even better.

So, I try them when we go out for dinner and I always make them at "home", wherever we're staying.  Mama's Fish House on Maui makes the best Mai Tais I've ever had in the islands--just my opinion.  And to make them at home, you need a great mix.

Trader Vic's makes the best Mai Tai Mix of all.  It's the only one I've found that has syrup of orgeat (pronounced or-zhah) that is basically almond extract, and is critical to the flavor of a Mai Tai.  Victor Bergeron (aka Trader Vic) invented the Mai Tai and he used syrup of orgeat when he did so.  Don't believe me?  Get the real story here.

I like them about half and half, or sometimes more rum than mix.  A tiny bit of light rum, a lot of Myers Dark Rum, and some Trader Vic's Mai Tai Mix and you're all set.
