Newport Coast Villas vacation, June 2011 Print

In June 2011, we spent two weeks in our timeshare at Newport Coast Villas.  It was the most relaxing vacation we've taken in years.  Many mornings, we'd start reading after breakfast and ask each other what we wanted to do that day, and after deciding, "Oh, how about nothing?", we'd go back to reading.  There's plenty to do in those parts, and we enjoyed some lovely excursions, but gee, what a great vacation.

New York in June 2011 Print

Customs scheduled a meeting of the Trade Support Network's Trade Leadership Council in New York.  Ostensibly, since AAEI paid for the meeting room, holding the meeting in New York saved money for Customs.  Factoring in all the travel expenses, it's still unclear to me how it saved money, but I hadn't been to New York since New Year's Day 2007 and it worked for me.

Star Trails in Joshua Tree, March 2011 Print

Following the success Duane and I had with a few star trails trips, we went again in December 2010 with Mark Comon of Paul's Photo to seriously examine the feasibility of putting together a Paul's Photo Star Trails Photo Adventure.  Having determined it was, in fact, feasible, Mark put the trip together and 25 of us went to Joshua Tree for a night of star trails and light painting photography on March 3, 2011.

Solvang, CA & the Santa Barbara wine country Print
We hadn't been to Solvang in—well, ages. We actually couldn't remember when we were there last, and we're pretty sure that we've never stayed there. Sue's parents had a home in Lompoc for a time, and lived in Morro Bay for a while, and my parents had a home in Cambria for some time, so Buellton was a frequent stopping point for us on trips to those areas, but we'd never really spent any time in Buellton or Solvang, even though they're next door to each other. Thus, it was a new—and delightful—experience for us to spend a long weekend in Solvang with our good friends Tony and Sam Rubino.

Indian Wells, New Year 2011 Print

We broke tradition this year by taking a four day, three night family vacation over the New Year holiday in Palm Springs.  We stayed in connecting rooms at the Renaissance Esmaralda Resort & Spa in Indian Wells--hugely popular with Christopher and Brooklyn because they love staying in HOtels, as they call them--and enjoyed a lovely, relaxing four days of family fun.

Romance Novel Print

He grasped me firmly but gently just above my elbow and guided me into a room, his room.  Then he quietly shut the door and we were alone.  He approached me soundlessly, from behind, and spoke in a low, reassuring voice close to my ear.  "Just relax."  Without warning, he reached down and I felt his strong, calloused hands start at my ankles, gently probing, and moving upward along my calves slowly but steadily.  My breath caught in my throat.  I knew I should be afraid, but somehow I didn't care.  His touch was so experienced, so sure.

Joshua Tree 2010 Print

Duane put together a four-day, three-night camping trip to Joshua Tree National Park for fathers and sons that included five dads and their sons, and he invited me to go along so I could enjoy the time with him and with Christopher.  And take photos.

Why I'm Boycotting Nike Print

Nike has a large counterfeiting problem.  Unscrupulous companies manufacture goods using Nike's logo and sell those goods wherever they can—swap meets, on the streets of New York, etc.  Admittedly, this is reprehensible and I support prosecution of any exporter and/or importer that is knowingly involved.

Ireland 2010 Print

We have been to Scotland and England a number of times (and there are articles on this site regarding most of those trips), and Sue went to Ireland with her parents in 1970, but I had never been to Ireland.  Given that my great grandfather on my mother's side immigrated to the U.S. from Ireland in 1852, we decided that we should go.
